Standing on Inner Farne, Northumberland, surrounded by 50,000 breeding pairs of puffins, you’d be forgiven for thinking they live in enormous flocks year-round. The reality is that they spend much of their time living solitary existences out on the waves of the North Atlantic ocean. Young birds can spend several years out at sea until congregating at the breeding colonies. All birds moult their ‘primary’ feathers - crucial for flight - annually - but puffins are unusual in that they will moult on both sides simultaneously, leaving them unable to fly for a couple of months, while they bob about on the open sea.
